Newly Refurbished Schools Open Their Doors to More Students in Aden
Aden - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) celebrated the finalization of rehabilitation works on four schools in Aden today.
Basuhaib, Ber Fadhl, Noor Aldin Qassim and Al Lwohom schools are now ready to receive 1,800 students. Rehabilitated and expanded classrooms have allowed the capacity to increase by several hundred students.
Many of these students have been out of school for years due to the conflict while others have been studying in cramped classrooms due to lack of space.
“Students who have begun the new term in the renovated schools are now able to learn in an improved space that allows them to thrive and excel,” said Firas Budeiri, head of IOM Yemen’s Transition and Recovery Unit.
“Education is an opportunity that should be afforded to all children in Yemen. IOM is proud to give more students the chance to learn and grow in a safe environment.”
According to the UN Children’s Fund, more than 2 million Yemeni children are out of school and millions more, especially young girls, are at risk of dropping out of school. Only two-thirds of Yemen’s schools are fully functional.
They are four of 15 schools that IOM and KSrelief have partnered to rehabilitate in four governorates across Yemen.
The newly rehabilitated schools are now equipped with a greater number of classrooms, bathroom facilities, improved furniture, and space for teachers to prepare their courses.
The completion of this project is also thanks to our generous donor and local authorities which include the Ministry of Education, the Aden Education Office and Aden Governor’s office.
