IOM’s shelter and non-food items (S-NFI) programme contributes to an effective and coordinated preparedness, emergency and recovery response in Yemen.

S-NFI teams provide lifesaving shelter assistance following the onset of emergencies after people are displaced by conflict or affected by disaster. This includes not only emergency shelter kits or family tents, but also household items that provide critical relief to communities.

To ensure the dignity of vulnerable groups and offer protection from harsh weather conditions, IOM rehabilitates damaged and worn-out emergency shelters, often installing thermal insulation on walls, roofs and flooring of emergency shelters through locally sourced materials.

In the long term, S-NFI teams help to improve the resilience of conflict-affected communities by providing more durable and sustainable shelter solutions in displacement sites or among host communities living in improvised shelters and inadequate conditions.

For example, transitional shelters are constructed for people who have been displaced for more than six months, which allows families to live in security and dignity.
